As I sit here thinking about why a fair number of the students around me often seem so pissed off at the world, I remember a comment I made earlier to some friends in medical school: when I pass GW Medical School on the way to the Law School every morning, I sometimes see medical students and interns and they just look so....nice. And happy. They have kind eyes and seem friendly. Then I go to the law school...and I just don't see the same thing. Why is this? A possible explanation just occurred to me. Medical students get to study the human body, the greatest of God's creations all day. They are learning about His divine works and are studying the fundamental processes, mysteries, and laws of Nature and thereby God, our creator as they learn how the body works and how to heal it. That's how we come closer to the Lord right? Through studying and internalizing his laws, words and works, making them a part of us? To some extent, those medical students get to work on that every day...study God...through his creations...every day. Us law students on the other hand spend all our time in the laws of men and worldly concerns. Things that fade and fail. And while I enjoy law school very much and find it incrediblly fascinating, I realize, as I sit in these classrooms and listen to my peers, what it truly is that brings everlasting peace and happiness: the knowledge of who you are, who you can become, and that you never have to go it alone. Just a thought. And I don't mean that medical students have it all figured out by any means, but perhaps it is the divine nature of the object of their study that accounts for that extra twinkle in their eyes.
